It really is a conundrum. What should the audience read into it? For example, an upcoming Kennedy Center revival of Bye Bye Birdie stars Ephraim Sykes as Conrad. Are we supposed to pretend he's not black? That's fine, but in a lightweight musical set in 1959 can we overlook the fact that a black man kissing a white girl on the Ed Sullivan Show would not have happened? If Conrad IS black, it would raise some fascinating issues/subplots that the script is not prepared to deal with. But Bye Bye Birdie is not Hairspray. BTW, I think Sykes could make a fantastic Albert (perhaps better than the actor cast -- Christian Borle -- who will probably be wonderful, but seems a bit old for the part.)
